A hydrogen bond acceptor is the atom, bearing a lone pair of electrons, that attracts the polarised hydrogen atom in a hydrogen bond. It is typically a highly electronegative atom such as fluorine, oxygen, or nitrogen. The acceptor pairs with a hydrogen bond donor, the X–H group that supplies the partially positive hydrogen.
