A chain transfer agent is a substance specifically added to a polymerization reaction to control the molecular weight of the polymer. It functions by reacting with the active center of a growing polymer chain, terminating its growth and transferring the active center to the chain transfer agent. This initiates the growth of a new polymer chain from the chain transfer agent. The use of chain transfer agents allows for fine-tuning the molecular weight and properties of the polymer product.
