Thermal decomposition is the decomposition of a compound brought about by the absorption of heat. The heat supplies the energy needed to break the bonds within the compound so that it splits into simpler substances. The breakdown of calcium carbonate into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide on strong heating is a familiar example.
