A hydroxide is a compound containing hydroxide (OH⁻) groups, typically formed when a metal oxide reacts with water. Metal hydroxides act as bases, releasing OH⁻ ions in solution. Sodium hydroxide is a soluble hydroxide and a strong base, whereas many metal hydroxides are only sparingly soluble.
