Electrolysis (electrolytic decomposition) is the decomposition of a compound brought about by passing an electric current through it, usually in the molten state or in solution. The electrical energy drives a reaction that would not occur spontaneously, separating the compound into its elements or simpler substances. Electrolysis is used industrially, for example to extract reactive metals and to produce chlorine.
