An aramid, or aromatic polyamide, is a polyamide whose repeating units contain aromatic rings; Kevlar is the best-known example. It matters because its strength comes from a combination of hydrogen bonding between chains and π-interactions between the stacked aromatic rings, giving fibres of exceptional strength used in body armour, cables and composites. The aromatic backbone makes an aramid far stronger and stiffer than an aliphatic polyamide such as nylon.
