Nylon is an aliphatic polyamide drawn into fibres, in which strength comes from hydrogen bonding between neighbouring polymer chains. It matters as one of the first commercially successful synthetic fibres, originally developed as a substitute for silk and now widely used in textiles and engineering. As an aliphatic polyamide, nylon contrasts with an aramid such as Kevlar, whose chains are aromatic and therefore far stronger.
