α-position (alpha carbon)
The α-position, or alpha carbon, is the carbon atom directly adjacent to a functional group, together with any hydrogens attached to it. It matters because the neighbouring group can make the α-carbon and its α-hydrogens unusually reactive, for example acidic next to a carbonyl group (C=O). The α-carbon is defined by position relative to the functional group, and the next carbon along is correspondingly called the β-position.
About the IPA
The International Phonetic Alphabet is a standardized system of symbols used to represent the sounds of spoken language.
It helps linguists, language learners, and educators accurately describe pronunciation across languages.
Example: the word "hello" in British English is transcribed as /həˈləʊ/ in IPA.
