A mole (mol) is the SI unit of amount of substance, defined as the amount that contains as many elementary entities as there are atoms in 12.000 g of carbon-12 (¹²C). One mole therefore always contains the same number of entities, given by Avogadro's number. The mole links the mass of a sample to the number of particles it contains, which is essential for stoichiometric calculations.
