An electron configuration is the description of how an atom's electrons are distributed among its various orbitals and subshells. It is written by filling orbitals in order of increasing energy, following the Aufbau principle, the Pauli exclusion principle, and Hund's rule. The configuration determines an element's position in the periodic table and much of its chemical behaviour.
