An induced dipole is a dipole created in a molecule by the influence of a nearby charge or dipole, which distorts the molecule's electron cloud. The more easily a molecule's electrons are distorted (the more polarisable it is), the larger the induced dipole. Induced dipoles give rise to dispersion forces and to ion–induced and dipole–induced dipole attractions.
